How can I prevent furniture tip overs?

One of the most dangerous accidents in a home is when a large piece of furniture or something like a television falls over on a child. Ensuring this does not happen in your home means taking some safety precautions. You want to make sure that everything in your home is safe for children and pets, who may also get injured due to their curious nature.

Nationwide suggests beginning with securing larger furniture and other items. For example, securing a television involves anchoring it to the wall with straps or brackets. Large furniture also needs secured to the wall. You can often find kits to do this. Some furniture may come with secure kits.

You also want to make these large items less inviting to children. So, put toys and other items for children on low shelves or away from the television. Put items up higher out of reach so they cannot pull them down on themselves. Hide away any items a child may try to climb to reach. However, put heavy items lower on shelves to help with the stability of the furniture.

It is important to think about all items in a room. You may need to install anti-tip devices on some furniture or items in a room so a child cannot pull them over.

Securing items and removing temptations are the best way to stop accidents where a large item falls on top of a small child. It can prevent serious injuries and damage to your items. This information is for education. It is not legal advice.
